The Deerhunter frontman returns with minimalist instrumentation and self-directed visuals.
Bradford Cox has returned to his solo project, Atlas Sound, following a hiatus since 2011. During a recent eight-song set at the Making Time ∞ festival in Philadelphia, Cox performed a full album of new material. The performance relied on sparse arrangements, featuring a bass guitar, brass bells, and an SP-404 sampler. This appearance marked his first scheduled live performance since 2019. Cox has now released a studio version of one track, "Octoberland," accompanied by a music video he directed. The Atlas Sound moniker, derived from a childhood karaoke machine, remains distinct from Deerhunter by focusing on sampling and pop structures. Additional festival dates are scheduled for 2027 at Big Ears in Knoxville, Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake City, and Primavera Sound in Barcelona. These upcoming shows follow his previous discography, which includes Parallax and the Bedroom Databank demo series.
The transition from a full band to a solo setup using portable gear like the SP-404 highlights how minimal tools can support a full creative comeback. Cox also demonstrates the utility of self-directed music videos to maintain complete aesthetic control over new releases.
