Engineer Jens of Strange Inventions Lab has developed a custom instant camera that records images onto reusable e-paper display cartridges. Built around a Raspberry Pi 3 A+, a 5-megapixel camera module, and a 3D-printed body, the device functions like a digital version of an Instax. Users slide 1.54-inch e-paper displays into a rear slot similar to a Game Boy cartridge. The e-paper displays black, white, red, and yellow, requiring a custom image-processing pipeline to remap colors into these four channels. Photographers can toggle between dithered and undithered modes to manage the stylized output. The cartridges require no batteries for display once removed from the camera. Strange Inventions classifies the project as intermediate difficulty, costing approximately €127 for the build including six cartridges.
