Sheffield and Milton Keynes are among four contenders in the running for the national cultural title.
Four locations are officially in the running for the UK City of Culture crown, highlighting cultural venues and artistic programming across the nation as the selection process for UK City of Culture 2029 advances.
Among the shortlisted cities, Sheffield City Council leader Fran Belbin welcomed the selection, calling the shortlisting fantastic news for the city.
The competition also spotlights Milton Keynes and its creative institutions. The Buckinghamshire city is home to a dedicated history museum as well as the MK Gallery. Adding to its cultural offerings during the contest, MK Gallery has opened an exhibition dedicated to British artist Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887–1976). The exhibition, which runs until 28 February 2027, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the artist's death, underscoring the prominent role of local galleries and cultural venues as cities vie for the national title.
The UK City of Culture 2029 shortlist brings national focus to regional cultural infrastructure, celebrating civic heritage and spotlighting major gallery exhibitions like MK Gallery's Laurence Stephen Lowry commemoration.
