The Residency offers a new intentional platform for Black entrepreneurs and artists to connect through the island's rhythms.
In the heart of Martha’s Vineyard, a new cultural experiment has taken root, designed to move beyond the typical vacation experience and into the realm of deep creative connection. Kellie Pean, the co-founder of the award-winning, women-owned marketing agency Brand New: A Collective, recently launched 'The Residency.' This initiative, which ran from August 11–15, was envisioned as a cultural 'third space'—a dedicated environment separate from home and work where creativity and community can flourish simultaneously.
The Residency was born from a desire to honor the long-standing traditions of Martha’s Vineyard, an island that has served as a sanctuary and gathering place for generations of Black families, entrepreneurs, and cultural leaders. Rather than a standard corporate retreat, Pean’s vision focused on a thoughtfully intentional platform that leaned into the natural rhythms of the island. Over five days, the program facilitated a series of conversations and creative exchanges aimed at fostering genuine connection among a diverse group of makers and thinkers.
By creating this dedicated space, Pean is addressing a specific need within the creative economy: the need for community support that transcends professional networking. The programming was designed to be both celebratory and generative, providing a venue where cultural leaders could share their studio practices and business insights in an atmosphere of mutual support. As the creative landscape shifts toward more independent and collective-based models, initiatives like The Residency highlight the importance of physical spaces that prioritize human connection and heritage as the foundation for creative work.
This initiative demonstrates how creative entrepreneurs can build their own 'third spaces' to bypass traditional industry gatekeepers. It highlights a growing trend of artist-led residencies that prioritize cultural heritage and community over commercial output.
