The Rembrandt House Museum teams up with tattoo studios to translate historic etching into ink
In Amsterdam, an ambitious craft collaboration is bridging classical printmaking and contemporary tattoo artistry. Through a partnership between the Rembrandt House Museum and two Dutch tattoo studios, a young man is set to become the lifelong owner of a free Rembrandt etching rendered entirely in ink across his back.
The initiative, titled “The Poor Man’s Rembrandt Project,” brings tattoo artists together to translate one of the Dutch master’s most intricate historical etchings—The Descent from the Cross (1633)—onto human skin. The undertaking requires an estimated 20 hours of delicate, detailed work to complete, demanding immense technical precision from the participating makers.
Executing the piece is a collaborative team of tattoo artists drawn from two studios: Schiffmacher & Veldhoen, based in Amsterdam, and St. Catherina, located in Antwerp. Rather than working in isolation, the artists share the challenge of adapting Rembrandt’s delicate line work, dramatic shading, and detailed compositions into the medium of tattooing.
This marks the second edition of the project connecting historical museum collections with living skin craft. Tattoo artists from Schiffmacher & Veldhoen first brought the concept to life in 2023, offering tattoos inspired by Rembrandt’s works directly inside a pop-up studio hosted at the Rembrandt House Museum. The new full-back commission pushes that craft dialogue further, celebrating printmaking traditions through the needle and ink of dedicated craftspeople.
This project highlights how traditional museum institutions can collaborate with contemporary craft and tattoo studios to keep historical artworks accessible. It also showcases how centuries-old printmaking and etching techniques can find vibrant new life and interpretation through the skill of modern makers.
