The Shanghai designer joined fellow honorees Dieter Vlasich Obermann and Rachel Luurssen at the festival
At the 41st International Festival of Fashion, Photography, and Accessories in Hyères, France, emerging design talents took center stage as the event announced its top honors. Taking home the festival's prestigious Grand Prize was Shanghai-based designer Yui Chen, recognized for an inventive collection titled "Food Cover."
Chen conceived the lineup—a women’s wear-leaning unisex collection—as an intimate creative effort and a tangible method for preserving childhood memories. Developed in collaboration with embroidery and textile house Montex, Chen's silhouettes recontextualize everyday garments into evocative design statements. Among the highlighted pieces within the collection was a yellow lingerie dress, demonstrating the designer's distinctive approach to transforming familiar domestic associations into forward-thinking runway garments.
The festival also spotlighted exceptional craft and conceptual depth through its specialty awards. Designer Dieter Vlasich Obermann secured the 19M Métiers d’Art Prize. Obermann’s winning presentation was anchored in craft tradition, drawing its inspiration directly from tiliches.
In addition, Rachel Luurssen received the Ateliers des Matières Prize. Luurssen’s women’s wear collection engaged with complex psychological and cultural narratives, taking direct inspiration from vintage Hollywood glamour while exploring layered concepts of fading beauty and body dysmorphia.
Together, the accolades celebrated at the 41st edition in Hyères underscore an international cohort of independent designers using distinct personal memories, craft heritage, and vulnerable cultural critiques to reshape contemporary wearable art.
The recognition of emerging creators at Hyères highlights the enduring power of personal memory and craft experimentation in fashion. It shows independent designers how pairing intimate concepts with specialized artisanal partnerships can yield industry-defining work.
